New Camera! New House!! and the Cockroach War

These are buttons made by a former Peace Corps Volunteer Bart who served in Pakistan. He gave them to us at the party he hosted to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps!!! aaaannnd I will hopefully be working with him and the CICL And CAR to construct a hiking trail in Puerto Princesa!

This is the most expensive item that we purchased for our home. Its called a "ref" here not a fridge. It is only about waist high but is totally worth it!
Some of the Peace Corps crew in Palawan eating our first dinner in our new place. Sam made veggie "burgers" that were delicious even though making them was kinda a disaster. They actually became veggie sloppy joes which I think was even better haha We also tried to get a picture without Ryan stuffing a burger into his face but they were so good it was impossible. :-)
Constructing our clothes line out of spare bamboo and wire. It actually turned out great with the help of my neighbor who is named Ray and owns a jeepney. He was cleaning his yard and gave me really good advice as to how to construct the best frame.

Krystal using said clothes line for the first time. Don't worry I helped wash the clothes!
Making our home as cozy as possible!

Our kitchen before we moved in. I will post more pictures at some point (takes a long time to upload) but the house came with the dinning table and chairs which was a huge bonus. We also got the gas tank and stove but the stove was rusted through and the hose was shot. So I bought a new hose which resulted in the demonstration posted below haha
The demonstration was to show how to put out a fire if there was a crack in the gas line. They asked me what I would do if the gas line caught fire. I simply said run like hell but apparently you can simply cover the hole with a finger and it will put the fire out.

The aftermath of the The Great Cockroach War of 2011. The war began early March 10th, 2011 with a preemptive strike using poison gas (By Gone) by the invading force of mankind. The cockroaches responded by deploying in vast numbers and sought to gain the high ground by climbing the walls of the battlefield. Mankind responded to this tactic by employing rolled up newspaper to swipe them from the hilltops. However, the sheer numbers of cockroaches on the ground pushed the forces of mankind back to the entrance to the battlefield and then the cockroaches began to employ scare tactics. Several of the cockroaches who had gained the high ground then proceeded to leap into the air and fly around in general crazy patterns to confuse and push back the enemy. They succeeded in large part until mankind used a combination of poison gas, newspaper and artillery (feet) to slowly corner and wipe out the once overwhelming cockroach numbers. Soon the cockroach force lay in ruins and clean operations began.

Wow, Matt and Krystal! The cinderblock houses stay kinda cool, and I see you have the luxury of a fan lol! The ref will come in sooo handy - will others in your village ask to use it from time to time? Do you have drinkable water, or is that white pitcher in the second picture for boiling water? Bamboo is such a versatile material, and I bet you have plenty of it haha! The kitchen is charming, and I like the tile countertops with decorations. Glad you know how to respond to a gas fire, sorta like the Dutchboy and the dike! Also glad to hear that humankind prevailed over the cockroaches, but I fear humankind has not heard the last of the ipis. They have learned alot over the past 400 million years... Love you both! Mom and Dad

Love the Pics! You can adapt to anything, that is one thing about you Krystal. Wendy and I were looking at the pictures (you washing the cloths) and I commented about not having a washer/dryer and Wendy, who has only known you a short time, said that "you are very good at adapting to anything thrown at you", something that shines about you. I hope I had something to do with that while growing up, "adventures". Must be really nice to have a place all your own!!! Do they have yard sales in your town, good way to fill your place with all kinds of goodies. Please send us your address, K? Wendy said you should have put a quarter next to the ipis so people could see how big they are in comparison. Either way they look BIG, I think a little bigger then Florida cockroaches. Keep the updates coming, I look forward to them. Dad
